(For Leticia B.)
Pasternak
I am going to Peredelkino.
That is where Pasternak once lived
and is now interred.
I will bring roses and vodka to his grave
and read the poems of his younger days
When Russia was the beloved of many a young men
on his way to the front.
In later years, when the young men
were back from the front,
He wrote a most beautiful poem:
“I want the heart of the matter.”
I am going to Peredelkino.

Philippine STAR Sunday Magazine
(Editor’s Note: The Filipino literary critic Isagani R. Cruz describes the poem as a
close approximation in English of the Cyrillic prosody. EM studied the Russian language under the auspices of the Russian Embassy in Manila. At the moment, EM is translating into the Waray (language) Boris Pasternak’s Nobel Prize-winning novel, Dr. Zhivago, from the original Russian text.)
